An Artist Journey - The ups and downs of creation, and how to keep moving forward.

Have you ever noticed the lines?

What are those lines in handmade pottery? They are called throwing rings.    Hey guys! If you have ever looked closely at a hand thrown piece of pottery (did you read the email or post about what thrown pottery is? You can read it here)? You might have noticed little rings around the pot.    Think of them like the growth rings in a tree. Each “ring” represents the potter pulling up the clay, little by little.    Some rings are very pronounced and large, almost bumpy. The rings in my pots are very small and smooth. You have to...

Bottoms up!!!

No one cares about the bottom of a cup.... WRONG! I care, I actually care a lot, and so should you.  Hey guys! Let’s talk about the bottom of pottery, because it is important! So, when I say my pieces are wheel thrown it means that for each and every piece, I sit down at a potters wheel and form the dish from scratch. (Think of the movie Ghost, but Patrick has yet to visit my studio!) I don’t...

So, this is 40...

Something that I was never told when I was younger was that things really don’t change that much as we get older, they simply compound. In all actuality I was probably told the opposite, that things change so much!!! But in reality, they don’t.  So here I am, recently turned 40 and it’s basically the same shit, just compounded. Now instead of saving up for a new cabbage patch doll, now I save up for vacations. Instead of buying candy at the little store, I now buy groceries at a fresh market. Same shit just compounded.  I still get together...
